D. Leo Sullivan -- Newport
D. Leo Sullivan (USN Commander, Ret.) of Naples, Florida and Newport, Rhode Island passed away at Naples Community Hospital on Tuesday, July 21, 2009. Leo was 94.
Above all else Leo loved the Navy, Notre Dame, Naples, Newport, and sailing on the Narragansett Bay.
Mr. Sullivan was born in Newport, Rhode Island on November 29, 1914, the son of John P. and Helen (nee Sullivan) Sullivan. Raised and educated in Newport, Leo graduated from the University of Notre Dame, class of 1938. He served proudly in the United States Navy during WWII attaining the rank of Commander, retiring in 1969.
After his career Leo spent his golden years splitting time between his home in Newport and Naples with his beloved wife Aline. Among other things, Leo enjoyed singing in the choir at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Naples, lunch at the Naples Sailing and Yacht club and The Naples retired officers club. Leo was well known for long walks around Old Naples. He was proud of the fact he was the last surviving member of the class of ’38 Notre Dame.
Leo will be remembered by family and friends as a loving husband a true friend and an Irishman that could spin a tale.
Leo was preceded in death by his beautiful wives Aline E. and Genevieve and his younger brother John William “Bill” and his sister Helen. Leo leaves behind his sister in law, Constance Sullivan, His nephews Brian, Barry, Billy and William and Betty Sullivan, Barbara Sarno Peter and Sam Popinchalk. In addition many grand nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 3rd at 10am, in St. Mary’s Church, Spring Street, Newport, RI. Burial at St. Columba Cemetery, Brown’s Ln, Middletown. Visiting hours will be held prior to the Mass from 8:45-9:30am in the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport, RI.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Leo’s name may be made to St. Ann’s Church, 475 9th Ave. South, Naples, FL. 34102 or St Mary’s Church, 12 William St., Newport, R.I., 02840.
