Mary (Cohen) Green -- Newport
Mary Green, 84 of Portsmouth died peacefully on Tuesday, August 25th at Miriam Hospital. Mary was born in Augusta, Maine, on September 6, 1924 to Samuel and Sarah (Soleveitchik) Cohen; she was the sister of Pauline Wolk, Frieda Foster, Frances Cutler, and John “Jack” Cohen, all of whom are deceased. Mary was the wife of the late Charles Green who passed away in 2007.
Mary was active in her local community throughout her life. In addition to being a member of the congregation of Touro Synagogue in Newport she was a member of several Jewish organizations such as B’nai B’rith, Hadassa, Ahavas Achim Synagogue, and the Jewish seniors group. Mary was made a lifetime member of the Rhode Island Democratic Party and was a former member of the Portsmouth Democratic town committee. She also served as president of the Portsmouth Women’s Democratic Club.
Services were held yesterday, August 27th, at 1pm at Beth Olam Cemetery in Middletown. Mary is survived by her son Steven, 51 and her sister-in-law Yeta Sieben and her husband Richard.
The family has requested that donations be made to Touro Synagogue and L.I.F.E. Incorporated (an agency specializing in the support of adults with developmental disabilities) in lieu of flowers.
