Eleanor Gobis -- Newport
Eleanor Gobis owner of Newport’s Cottage & Garden and Tastemaker Stores died on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. She had been under treatment at the Dana Farber Cancer Center for four years battling leiomyosarcoma.
Eleanor was born in Sewickley, Pennsylvania but was raised in Dearborn, Michigan. She was a graduate of Michigan State University. Prior to opening Cottage & Garden in 1997 and Tastemaker in 2005, she had spent more than 20 years working in various corporate positions for the food service and service management company ARAMARK. Her career with ARAMARK including managing fine dining services at General Electric’s Jet Engine Factory in Cincinnati to coordinating food service deliveries to oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico to staging state dinners for foreign heads of state.
Eleanor was the daughter of the late Andrew and Eleanor Palko of Dearborn, Michigan. She was the wife of John N. Gobis who survives her and the mother of the late Cheryl Ann Baker; Gretchen Kudla Spath of Seattle, Washington and Nina Gleeson of LaGrange, Kentucky. She is survived by two grandchildren, Elle Gleeson and Mateo Spath; a brother Andrew Palko of Dearborn, Michigan and Mary Ann Palko of Rochester, Michigan, her sister.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at 9am in St. Mary’s Church, Spring St., Newport. Burial private. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, September 11 from 7-9pm in the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport, RI.
In lieu of flowers, gifts to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute 10 Brookline Place West; Brookline, Massachusetts 02445 would be appreciated by the family.
