Gilbert Burnett, Jr. -- Middletown
Gilbert Burnett, Jr., 88, of Middletown, RI, died Sunday, September 13, 2009, in
Newport. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, August 5, 1921, he was the son of the
late Judge Gilbert Burnett, Sr. and Helen Wiseman Burnett.
After graduating from Princeton University in 1943, he joined the Office of
Strategic Services and served in Indochina. He later worked for the CIA in
Washington, DC, where he met his first wife, Hildreth, with whom he had a
daughter, Hildreth Burnett Potts, of Sidney, Australia. With his second wife,
Daphne, he had two sons, Michael Burnett, of North Plainfield, NJ, and Jefferson
Burnett, of Bethesda, MD.
Gilbert Burnett was a teacher at several independent schools, including Punahou
School, Hawaii Preparatory School, and Phillips Andover Academy, before becoming
chair of the science department at St. George’s School in Newport, RI, where he
taught for 27 years.
He was predeceased by his wife, Daphne, and his three sisters, Ann Van Oss,
Adelaide Hawn, and Betsy Labouchere. He leaves three children and five
grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to St.
George’s School, PO Box 1910, Newport, RI 02840.
