Sheila (Walsh) Durgin, 80, of Goat Island South, Newport, died Thursday, October 15, 2009 at the Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of William A. Durgin. Born in Newport on June 5, 1929, she was a daughter of the late John J. and Margaret (O’Hanley) Walsh.

She was a graduate of the former St. Catherine Academy in Newport and the College of New Rochelle in New York. Sheila along with her husband owned and operated the family real estate business in Newport and Middletown for many years. After retiring she worked as a guide for Viking Tours. She was a long time parishioner of St. Augustin’s Church.

Besides her husband of 56 years, she is survived by her sons William A. Durgin, Jr. and his wife Mary Katherine of Lafayette, CA and George M. Durgin and his wife Marianne of Middletown; 8 grandchildren; her sisters Mary (Walsh) Nunes of Newport and Sr. Anne C. Walsh, O.S.U. of New Rochelle, NY; and her brother Francis W. Walsh of New York City, NY.

Sheila was the mother of the late John J. Durgin, and the sister of the late Rev. John J. Walsh, S.J., William J. Walsh, Alexander R. Walsh, Margaret (Walsh) Hitchcock, Joseph M. Walsh, Peter A. Walsh, and Raymond J. Walsh.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 19, 2009, at 10 am in St. Augustin’s Church, Carroll Ave, Newport. Burial at St. Columba Cemetery, Brown’s Ln, Middletown. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, October 18, from 3-6pm in the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport, RI.
