Alan Willoughby Ph.D -- East Greenwich
East Greenwich – Alan Willoughby Ph.D, 81, a resident of East Greenwich of the past forty seven years, died Friday October 2, 2009. He was the loving husband, and life partner, of Jane (Winter) Willoughby. Born in Worcester, MA, and raised in East Providence, he was a son of the late Raymond Royce and Miranda (Goodrie) Willoughby.
Dr. Willoughby graduated from Brown University in 1949, where he received his BA. He was an army veteran of the Korean War. He earned his MA and Ph.D at the University of Connecticut graduating in 1959. He worked as a clinical psychologist in various veteran hospitals and clinics in New England throughout his career. He was a Professor of Psychology at the University of Rhode Island for thirty years retiring in 1998, where he obtained an Emeritus in Psychology. He founded and directed the first alcohol treatment unit of any VA Hospital, in Providence. Dr. Willoughby was a past president of the RI Mental Health Association and a former Chairman of the Governor’s Council on Mental Health. He was the founder and CEO of the Good Hope Center, in West Greenwich, the first private residential substance abuse treatment facility in RI. He published a number of articles on substance abuse and psychological topics and authored the book, “The Alcohol Troubled Person, Known and Unknown.”
Besides his wife, he is survived by his son, David R. Willoughby of WA, two daughters, Nancy L. Willoughby of CA, and Eve W. Calise of RI, his son-in-law Archie Calise and his grandson Kyle Calise. He is also survived by his brother Hugh Willoughby, his sister Anne W. DiMase both of RI and was the brother of the late Joan W. Sharpe of CA.
A memorial service will be Friday, October 23, 2009 at 11 AM at the Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home, 659 East Greenwich Ave., West Warwick, RI. The family will receive friends prior to the service. Interment is private. Al and I were best of friends from our earliest days at Arthur E. Platt School until thelast time we saw each other at the 50th reunion of the East Providence High class of 45. A real SOB at times yet he was one of the wittiest and most irreverent and best of friends I've ever had. I will miss him and will always remember our motorcycle ride to Canada in 1946. In losing him, we have all lost a remarkable man. My sympathy to his wife Jane and his children and to his siblings Hugh and Ann.
