Sabina M (Jaworski) Shields -- Middletown
Sabina M. (Jaworski) Shields passed away peacefully on October 24, 2009. Born on August 10, 1916, in Chicago, IL, she was one of four children of Frances and Janek Jaworski. When Sabina was a child, her family moved to a farm in Jackson, Michigan. She graduated from Jackson High School and was later employed by the Burroughs Adding Machine Co. in Chicago.
In 1948 she married her late husband, William F. Shields, and they resided outside Washington, D.C. where William was with the U.S. Secret Service. Their daughter Josephine was born in 1952 and son William in 1955. In 1957, Sabina and William built a second home in Old Saybrook, CT, where they spent many happy summers and weekends with family and friends. Sabina loved those days, spent by the ocean, enjoying her children, and tending to her garden and yard.
In 1957, William was re-assigned and Sabina and her family relocated to Providence, RI. She spent her time as a devoted volunteer at the Franciscan Mission Convent and at the St. Augustine’s School in N. Providence.
Sabina and William moved to Middletown in 1974. She enjoyed her years there, tending to her yard, gathering with friends, antique hunting, walking the beaches, and cherishing visits from her children and three grandchildren. She always loved knitting, needlepoint, and rug-hooking, and was active with the rug-hooking groups at the Swinburn School in Newport.
Sabina is survived by her brother Bill and sister-in-law Janice, of Nokomis, FL; daughter Josephine and grand-daughter Isabel, of Brookline, MA; son William, daughter-in-law Robin, grandsons Nicholas and Thomas, of Wallingford, PA, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins in Michigan and Chicago.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church in Newport at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Sabina’s name to the Potter League for Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840.
