Barry D Gately -- Barrington

Bellows Funeral Chapel Barrington - Barry D. Gately, 76, passed away on April 8.

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Edward Joseph & Louise Marie (Cornell) Gately.

Barry is survived by three nephews; Bary Gately of Annapolis, MD, Edward Joseph Gately III of Amherst, MA and Christopher Gately of Ardmore, PA.

Mr. Gately was a graduate (1952) of Governor Dummer Academy in South Byfield, MA. At GDA Barry was a 4-year letterman in football and golf, as well as the editor in chief of the school magazine. As a member of the football team, Barry played for Arthur W. Sager. Under Sager’s tutelage Barry enjoyed MVP honors in 1952.

After graduation from GDA, Barry attended Amherst College, where he earned a BA in History and Religion. He was member of the freshman football team and a 4-year member and team captain of the golf team.

Following his graduation from Amherst (1956), Barry attended the Carnegie Institute of Technology School of Printing in 1957, where he received specialized training in the printing field.

Over the next 20 years Barry successfully worked in the printing business. He last served as the Vice President and CEO of Geneva Printing and Publishing Company in 1975.

After retiring from the printing business, Barry dedicated his life to the betterment of young men and women.

From 1975 to 1983 Barry served as an official for the Rhode Island Golf Association and the Tournament Director for the Wannamoisett Junior Invitational.

In 1983, Barry was named Vice President of the United States Challenge Cup Junior Golf Foundation. Twelve years later he was named President of the organization. In 1997, Barry captained Team New England to victory over Team Florida in the annual Challenge Cup Matches at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa.

In addition to his tireless contributions to the Challenge Cup Mr. Gately became a strong supporter of the Governor Dummer Academy community. Over the past 20 years Barry attended nearly all of their football games, as well as countless other GDA events. In 2002, Barry was named GDA Alumni of the Year.

Mr. Gately was an avid and accomplished golfer. Over the years he was a member at Rhode Island CC, Wannamoisett CC, Warwick CC and the Olympic Club (in San Francisco, CA). He was junior club champion at Warwick CC, a club champion at Rhode Island CC and the 1978 Foster Cup champion at Wannamoisett. As a member at Wannamoisett CC, Barry recorded four hole-in-ones.

Barry also enjoyed racing Corvettes. He was a member of the Sports Car Club of America.

True to his persona Barry was active with Big Brothers of America and also was a sponsor for members of Alcoholics Anonymous.

A celebration of Barry’s life will be held on Sunday, May 30th at 2:00pm, at Wannamoisett Country Club, 96 Hoyt Avenue, Rumford.
