Rita Berman Zamil of Newport, RI, died Friday, June 25, 2010 surrounded by her loving family. She was 88 years old. Born and raised in Providence, RI, Rita was the daughter of the late Louis and Ida Berman. After a whirlwind courtship of six weeks she then became the loving wife of the late Dr. Edward Zamil for 42 years. She was the devoted mother of five children, Judith Bolon and her husband Craig, of Brookline, MA, Debbie Zamil and her husband Robert Hovan of North Attleboro, MA, Lynne Maloy and her husband Patrick of Milton, Delaware, Nancy Zamil of Manassas, VA and James Zamil and his wife Cheryl of Portsmouth, RI. She was the grandmother of Dr. David Bolon and his wife Dr. Athena Remolina of NYC, Dr. Daniel Bolon and his wife Dr. Jen Stephens of Shrewsbury, MA, Gregory Hovan and his fiancé Cynthia Spudis, of Lincoln, DE, and Nicholas Hovan and his fiancé Amy Lizewski of Worcester, MA, Alexandria Maloy of Milton, DE, and Sarah, Andrew, Lillian and Grace Zamil of Portsmouth. Also, great-grandmother to Jack, Isabella, Cecilia and Anna and was eagerly awaiting the birth of her second great grandson.

A graduate of Hope High School class of 1939, Rita attended Rhode Island School of Design, and was a member of the Art Association of Newport where she displayed her talent in the medium of oil. An accomplished bridge player, she was a member of the American Contract Bridge League achieving her silver life master. Rita spent her summers with her family as members of Third Beach Club. She also enjoyed playing golf

In the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s, Rita was involved in numerous activities, most of which were in support of her husband and children including school and hospital activities. Rita was president of various PTO’s, president, and vice-president of the women’s auxiliary of Newport Hospital and she participated and organized many activities. Rita always had an open house for her family and friends.

At her request, a Graveside Service will be held on Sunday, June 27, at 2pm at Beth Olam Cemetery, Wyatt Rd., Middletown. Shiva will be held at her residence on Sunday evening from 7-9pm, and on Monday from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.

Donations may be made to the Newport Fire Department Rescue Wagon Fund, 21 West Marlborough St., Newport, RI, 02840.
