Harold J Congdon -- Westerly

Harold J. Congdon, 92, of Main Street, North Stonington, CT, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, March 1, 2011 at the Westerly Hospital. He was pre-deceased by his wives, Virginia (Longo) Congdon and Shirley J. (Seidel) Congdon. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, James A. and Marie Congdon of Pawcatuck, his son and daughter-in-law, Greg J. and Donna Congdon of North Stonington, his daughter and son-in-law, Linda M. and Sal Costanza of North Stonington, six grandchildren, Michael Costanza, Andrea Riley, Pamela Bates, Melissa Congdon, Christie Congdon and Steven Congdon, a great-granddaughter, Gianna Riley and several cousins. He was also pre-deceased by his brothers, Arthur and Russell Congdon, his sisters, Bessie Speed, Hazel Lieberman, Ruth Grimes, Laura Gosselin and Barbara LaMay.

Mr. Congdon was born in Plainfield, CT on July 20, 1918, the son of the late Frank and Callie (Haskell) Congdon. He was a graduate of Plainfield High School, Class of 1936, where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball. Mr. Congdon, who was part of the “Greatest Generation”, was a structural engineer for the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Local 15 Iron Workers of Hartford for over 70 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post #152, the Coastal Lodge #57 AF+AM, the Coon Society and the Mayflower Descendants.

Calling hours will take place on Friday, March 4, 2011 from 4:00-7:00 pm at Rushlow-Iacoi Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 64 Friendship Street, Westerly with funeral services to follow in the funeral home. Burial services will be private.
