Robert F. J. Ward, Sr. -- Warwick
Robert F. J. Ward, Sr., 85, of Ticonderoga Drive, Warwick, died peacefully at Rhode Island Hospital on Thursday, April 7, 2011. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late J. Howard Ward and Helen R. (Lyons) Ward. He was the husband of the late Dorothy F. (Mulvey) Ward.
Mr. Ward was employed by the City of Warwick as the Clerk of the Board of Canvassers (Elections) for over a decade, retiring in 1994. He was formerly employed as an Engineer/Supervisor for New England Telephone Co. for 30 years. A retired State Representative, he served District 33 in Warwick. A graduate of LaSalle Academy, Providence and the University of RI, he also received 9 credits toward his Master of Public Administration.
He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was active for many years as a member of the Warwick Democratic City Committee, serving as the Chairman of the 5th Ward Committee and the Representative District Committee. He was a long-time member of the 5th Ward Democratic Club, the Warwick Sewer Advisory Committee, the Warwick Board of Canvassers, serving as Chairman from 1965 to 1969, a member and Vice Chairman of the Warwick Zoning Board from 1971 to 1974, and the RI Association of Zoning Boards. He was Past Vice President of Local # 5 I.B.T.W., Past President of the Meadow Brook Farm Civic Association, a member of the William Paca Club, and past member of Troop # 1 Boy Scout Committee, and a founding member of St. Kevin Parish.
He leaves his two daughters: Kerri Ann Ward and Soibhan Marie Ward-Kosofsky, both of Warwick, three grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Robert F. J. Ward, Jr. and Mary Catherine Ward-French, and brother of the late John Ward and Helen Ward.
His funeral will be held Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 8:45 am from THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Greenwood, Warwick (Exit 12A off I-95) with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Kevin Church, 333 Sandy Lane, Warwick. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm.
