Russell Joseph Inserra, 85, of Westerly, and formerly of New Rochelle, NY, passed away on Thursday morning, July 14, 2011 at the Clipper Home of Westerly. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marion B. (Faklaris) Inserra of Westerly. He was the loving father of Richard and Margaret Inserra of Ridgefield, CT, Russell and Jill Inserra of Houston, TX, Christopher and Felicia Inserra of Ridgefield, CT, Mary-Jo and Wayne DePena of Annandale, NJ, Elizabeth and Byron Gray of New Rochelle, NY, Mark and Judith Inserra of Joliet, IL, Paul and Marie Inserra of Cary, NC, Jeanne and Bill Lalli of Hawthorne, NY, Reverend John Inserra of the Bridgeport Diocese, Kathryn and Frank Gilligan of White Salmon, WA and Dr. Michelle Inserra of Mountain View, CA. He was the loving grandfather of 21 and great-grandfather of 8 and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Inserra was born in New York City, NY on March 3, 1926, the son of the late Ignatius and Francis (Lombardo) Inserra. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy. After the war, Russ became a social worker in New York City working for the YMCA, Boys Clubs, settlement houses and an adoption center. He was responsible for managing two boys clubs in the Bronx. When he retired to Westerly he worked for 6 years as a director of senior activities at the COMO in Stonington. He was a Westerly Hospital volunteer for 15 years as well as a Eucharistic Minister at the Immaculate Conception Church of Westerly. Russ was a marriage prep member, a St. Vincent de Paul Society member, a driver for meals on wheels and a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 10:00 am at Immaculate Conception Church, 111 High Street, Westerly. Burial with full military honors will take place at St. Sebastian Cemetery, Westerly. Calling hours will take place on Monday from 4-7 pm at Rushlow-Iacoi Funeral Home & Crematory, 64 Friendship Street, Westerly.
