Providence – Gladys May (Shellenberger) Schobel, 93, of Frederick County, VA and formerly of Porter Street, died Thursday, November 29, 2012 in her home. She was the beloved wife of the late Herman M. Schobel who preceded her in death on August 30, 1980.
Mrs. Schobel was born in Providence in 1919 and was a daughter of the late Harry and Lulu May (Roth) Shellenberger. Gladys will be fondly remembered for her kindness, generosity, spirit, baking and unblemished driving record. She was a homemaker, loving Mother, grandmother and great grandmother. For over eighty years she was a very active member of the Washington Park United Methodist Church in Providence. She also was a volunteer driver for the Association of the Blind for forty years.
Surviving are two daughters: Dr. Ruth Schobel and her husband Lucian Rind of Miami, FL and Jean Schobel, RN and her companion Craig Youngs of Winchester, VA; two sons: George Schobel and his wife Noel of Sarasota, FL and Warwick and Richard Schobel and his wife Joy of New Portland, ME; one sister: Lucille Whelan of Boynton Beach, FL; seventeen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. She was the former mother-in-law of Cathy Schobel, Rosemarie Cabral, Albert Gadoury and Pam Shoenfaber. She was preceded in death by two sons: Raymond E. Schobel and Det. Donald F. Schobel, PPD and by one sister: Freda Schofield.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, December 2, 2012 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick. Her funeral service will be conducted on Monday, December 3 at 10:00 AM in the Open Table of Christ Church, formerly Washington Park UMC, 1520 Broad Street, Providence, RI 02905. Burial will be in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions made to Open Table of Christ Church would be appreciated.
