John W Potter -- East Providence

East Providence – John W. Potter, 83, of Wildwood Avenue, Rumford died June 2, 2009 at the Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island, Pawtucket. He was the husband of Joan (Smith) Potter for 62 years.

Born in Providence, a son of the late Dr. Alfred Potter and Dr. Merle (Mosier) Potter, he and his family lived in Rumford since 1952.

Mr. Potter was a 1942 graduate of Hope High School in Providence and a 1946 graduate of Dartmouth College. He did his post graduate training at Amos Tuck School of Business Management, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. From 1943 to 1946, he was in the U.S. Navy flight training program, earning his wings and commission as an SBD dive bomber pilot.

Mr. Potter was the purchasing agent and material control manager for Teknor Apex of Pawtucket for 35 years before retiring in 1988. Previously, he had worked for Fram Corporation and Abrasive Machine and Tool.

Mr. Potter was a past member of Pawtucket Country Club, the Rhode Island Purchasing Agents Association, the Boston Rubber Club and The Anawan Club of Rehoboth, MA. For eighteen years, he coached and managed in the Rumford Little League. He enjoyed duplicate bridge, golf, fishing, and most of all, his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Nancy Fabisak of Middleton, NH; three sons, John C. Potter and Jeffrey L. Potter, both of Rehoboth, MA and Thomas C. Potter of Ayr, Scotland; and his eight grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Dr. Clinton Potter of Barrington; one sister, Judith Corey of Sandusky, OH; and several nieces and nephews.

A private Memorial Service will be held at Swan Point Cemetery on Monday, June 8, 2009. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Potter’s memory to the Cancer Center of Memorial Hospital of RI, 111 Brewster Street, Pawtucket, RI 02860 would be appreciated.
